THE LEGAL SERVICES SOCIETY (LSS) IS A NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION CREATED BY THE LSS ACT IN 1979 TO PROVIDE LEGAL INFORMATION, ADVICE, AND REPRESENTATION SERVICES TO PEOPLE WITH LOW INCOMES. MOST PEOPLE CALL US LEGAL AID BC. OUR PRIORITY IS TO SERVE THE INTERESTS OF PEOPLE WITH LOW INCOMES. BUT MANY OF OUR SERVICES ARE AVAILABLE TO ALL BRITISH COLUMBIANS.

project overview

Despite advances in technology, especially those designed for mass media, the medium of radio still
reaches a broad cross-section of society. Information disseminated through radio has a high likelihood
of reaching people from a variety of social and economic backgrounds.
Working in a team of two (2) Student volunteers will research and prepare one radio show on the
legal topic of their choosing. Students will choose a research question, area of law, or issue with the
supervising lawyer and will prepare and record a show that explains the current state of the law
surrounding that topic. The shows will solely contain a legal information session. As well, it will be
important that students explain the law without providing legal advice.
The lawyer supervisor will need to review the research and finished product before it goes on air.
Students will need to provide all research materials used in preparation of the show and should ensure
that their research is cross-referenced with the recorded show. All references to sources should be
provided for the lawyer, and should note the time in the show that they are used. The students will also
be required to provide the supervising lawyer with a digital copy of the recorded show for the lawyer to
hear and provide feedback. In order to reach a greater audience and to allow greater flexibility on the
part of the supervising lawyer, the show will be pre-recorded. This will allow the radio station to play it
multiple times, in time slots that are most convenient, and for the lawyer to listen to it at their
convenience and provide suggestions for edits.
