Catherine White Holman Wellness Centre provides low-barrier wellness services to transgender and
gender non-conforming people in a way that is respectful and celebratory of clients’ identity and self-
expression.
The Centre is volunteer run, and all of the practitioners are volunteering their time, so that the Centre
can offer free services to people who need them, regardless of factors like citizenship, health insurance,
or residential address.

project overview


Under the direction of Samuel Singer, students will research and write a memo on trans
competent lawyering that will explore the work that has been done across Canada and in the
United states to help members of the bar become trans competent.
While the focus of the research will be set by Adrienne Smith and Samuel Singer, topics may
include:
-The history of trans rights jurisprudence in Canada
-Trans legal issues beyond Human Rights Law
-Methods for building solidarity with trans people
-Respectful interactions with trans clients

two students will be required for this project.

expectation of students 


A workplan is required.
basic training on trans issues will be provided.
volunteers are expected to put in 3-5 hours per week.
schedule for completing hours is flexible.
there are no prerequisites for this project. however, there is an expectation for: A familiarity with issues facing the trans community and a minimum level of trans competency are
required for this project. Priority will be given to law students who are trans, non-binary, two-spirit,
or gender non-conforming; or who have demonstrated solidarity with this community.
